分厚さにビックリ。持ってみてその重さにさらにビックリ。巻頭言は漢字にルビがびっしり振ってあって，なんだか明治の新聞のような雰囲気が漂っている(横書きだけど)。
目次を眺める。第III部で物理学の内容になる。ガリレイ，ニュートン，最速降下曲線なんてのも出てくる。何年か前，ちょっと話題になった東工大のAO入試問題は，本書の11章「トライアスロンと屈折率」がネタだったのか！と思いたくなる。
さらに目次を読み進めると，そこには「波動方程式」「マックスウェル方程式」「シュレディンガー方程式の発見的導出」「不確定原理」と話は量子力学にまで及ぶ。
一人でコツコツ栗石を敷き詰める基礎工事から始めてだんだん構造物が立ち上がってきて，やがて空に高くそびえ立つ高層建築が完成するような内容のとても充実した本のようだ。
