いわゆる「ミステリー」や「ホラー」を期待していると肩透かしを食うかもしれない。事件がいよいよ動き出すかというところで、読者は聞き手役の女性と一緒に放り出される。真相を知るにはあまりに手がかりが少ない。何故そんな話をキングは書いたのか…そのねらいも、ちゃんと作品中に示されている。「ストーリー」を求めてしまう人間の心理に挑戦し、ほんとうの物語の楽しみとは何かを浮き彫りにする佳作。

遂に読んでしまった。キング最後の大作。何故最後かは読めば納得。今までの小説全てを通じてキングが語りたかったことを全部語っちゃったから。作家が作品を生むのではなく作品が作家を生かすのだ。作家は物語の創り手ではなく語り手にすぎない。物語の楽しみは結末ではなく過程にこそある。プロットや結末だけを楽しみたい人には期待はずれかも。でも過程を楽しむ人には…7巻ラスト1/3の描写は色褪せない楽しみとなること請け合い。
